“Some nations boast of their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God.” Psalms 20:7
As the mid-term elections are coming to an end in America, it’s good to remember where our confidence lies. In Scripture we see nations rise and fall. We see battles won and lost. We see civil fighting, wars, conflict, and chaos. We also see peace, love, unity, and community.
Over the past 200 plus years, the United States of America has grown from a small group of Colonies to a flourishing nation. The founders had a vision of a peaceful, free nation that would invite the world to come live in freedom and unity in spite our differences. And, for short periods of time, we have seen glimpses of this peace and unity.
Politics have become a divider instead of a unifier. We have chosen our horses and chariots – or should I say our Donkeys and Elephants. We have boasted in who has the most noble and free vision for America. We have ridden our Donkeys and said that those riding Elephants are bad. We have ridden our Elephants and looked down on those riding Donkeys with superior glares.
The Psalmist knew this would all lead to failure. We don’t choose Chariots or Horses, Donkeys or Elephants for victory – we choose the name of God! We can’t trust in an Elephant for victory! They will only run us over. The same goes for Donkeys! They will only kick us off when they are tired of us. By now, you have caught that Donkeys and Elephants are Democrats and Republicans. We can’t boast in them! They have been fighting for generations and will always let us down. They are only broken down chariots and lame horses.
When choosing who to throw our trust in and who to boast in, let’s pick King Jesus! He will never leave us or forsake us. He will never disappoint. He will never embarrass. He will never make the wrong choice. He will always show up on time. He will always lead us to freedom and peace. He will never run us over or cast us aside. He is dependable, trustworthy, and good.
Where are you boasting? Where are you trusting? Donkeys and Elephants? Crypto or Dollars? Stars and Stripes? Let our boasting be in the name of the Lord God Almighty!
